Alternate, Virtual, and Augmented Realities

COVID-19 has forced us to experience the world in altered ways. It replaced physical contact with a virtual landscape while reminding us – like never before – that health and wellbeing are fragile and complex.

By bringing together ideas and experiences from the social sciences, the arts, the humanities, medicine and science, we will use the diverse experiences of twenty-first century pandemic life as a starting point for a wide-ranging exploration of alternate, augmented and virtual realities and their influence on health, care and wellbeing.

We hope that this conference will provide a platform through which to navigate the visceral impact of isolation, and to explore how different modes of realities come to shape and influence our sense of lived spaces and lived experience. We also hope to create a collaborative and supportive space in which to share research, discuss ideas, and think towards potential future collaborations.

All are welcome, whether based in Durham or far beyond. You do not need any previous knowledge of the Medical Humanities to attend – it will be a great opportunity to find out more about this interdisciplinary field.
