A primary school classroom

How do children encounter poetry in primary schools? What can be done to ensure poetry is fully part of children's reading, both inside and outside the classroom?

A recent report by the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) and Macmillan Children’s Books found that one in five schools do not have poetry as a significant part of their curriculum, and that in nearly 20% of schools children never have the opportunity to hear a poem read aloud.

This online event will consider what barriers exist to the teaching of poetry in primary schools and explore how such barriers can be overcome. It features four speakers:

  • Charlotte Hacking, Learning and Programme Director at the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education
  • Rosemary and David Waugh, authors of Integrating Children's Literature in the Classroom (2022)
  • Poet and editor Rachel Piercey

Please register in advance of the event in order to receive the Zoom link.
