Biography

Current study: PhD by Composition, part-time (supervised by Dr. Eric Egan and Prof. Richard Rijnvos)

Academic interests and research areas include: 

  • the juxtaposition of compositional materials
  • Surrealism (specifically with sung texts, staging, and dramatic performance)
  • methods of generating structure that allow wider exploration of the distribution of intuitively-written materials
  • the timbral and spectral possibilities of the electric cello, as well as exploration of the use of the expression pedal
  • the setting of folk melodies with a contemporary art music approach to structure
  • musical 'moments', as employed by Cage and Stockhausen

 Past commissions include:

  • Southbank Centre
  • London Sinfonietta
  • Strathaven Choral Society (commissioned by Making Music)

 Current work includes:

  • commission for saxophone duo
  • commission for mezzo-soprano and piano that explores Surrealism in the text-writing and staging of a song cycle in the Lieder format
  • live electric cello improvisation collaborations with other musicians
  • short solo violin work for Durham University workshop
