Biography
Current study: PhD by Composition, part-time (supervised by Dr. Eric Egan and Prof. Richard Rijnvos)
Academic interests and research areas include:
- the juxtaposition of compositional materials
- Surrealism (specifically with sung texts, staging, and dramatic performance)
- methods of generating structure that allow wider exploration of the distribution of intuitively-written materials
- the timbral and spectral possibilities of the electric cello, as well as exploration of the use of the expression pedal
- the setting of folk melodies with a contemporary art music approach to structure
- musical 'moments', as employed by Cage and Stockhausen
Past commissions include:
- Southbank Centre
- London Sinfonietta
- Strathaven Choral Society (commissioned by Making Music)
Current work includes:
- commission for saxophone duo
- commission for mezzo-soprano and piano that explores Surrealism in the text-writing and staging of a song cycle in the Lieder format
- live electric cello improvisation collaborations with other musicians
- short solo violin work for Durham University workshop
