Biography

Philip in in his first year of a part time doctorate in the department of Music. He is researching how the challenges of Jewish identity influenced the ideas of Jewish musicologists and music theorists in the long nineteenth century in German speaking lands, particularly focussing on Vienna and Berlin. Philip is supervised by Professor Bennett Zon in the Music department and Dr. Tom Stammers in the History department. 

Philip holds a BA in Economics (1987) and an MA in Music (2022). Philip’s masters dissertation looked at the interaction between musical and choreographic form in ballet. 

Philip is treasurer of International Nineteenth Century Studies Association (INCSA). He is a trustee of a number of performing arts organisations and an amateur conductor, performing with orchestras in London and Durham.
