Lunar New Year Lantern Festival

Date: February 2024

Celebrate Lunar New Year with this special late-night opening at the Oriental Museum.

In collaboration with Durham University students and the local community, we will mark Lunar New Year with a celebration including storytelling, performances, crafts and much more.

Lunar New Year is celebrated across Asia, including in China, Vietnam, Korea and Laos. During the two-week festival, people travel to see their family and friends, give gifts, and eat a New Year meal. 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit, so join in and find out about the traditions of this ancient festival.

Booking is essential and everyone welcome, with more information coming soon.

Get involved

We are looking for volunteers of East Asian and Southeast Asian heritage to help develop and deliver the festival programme. If you are interested, please email Charlotte at the Oriental Museum or telephone +44 (0)191 334 5694.
