Research Skills Session Information

Internal view of the main staircase of the Bill Bryson Library

This session can be taught:

  • On-site, in a lecture theatre near the Bill Bryson Library
  • as an online session

This session has been designed to teach post-16 students the research skills they will need for their studies, including for Extended Project Qualification and non-exam assessment. This also supports their transition into undergraduate studies.

On-site Session:

Students will be given a short lecture highlighting research strategy, and how to access and reference research material.

This session can be combined with an induction tour of Durham University’s main library (the Bill Bryson Library), learning how to use the library. Many groups then remain on-site for a period so that students can access materials and continue their research.

Need to know:

  • Due to health and safety requirements, teachers are expected to attend and stay for the whole induction and tour.
  • The induction and tour last for approximately one hour and 30 minutes.
  • There is no charge for this session.
  • If you wish your students to use the University’s main library for research, they must first attend a Research Skills session and the induction tour. After this, they will be free to use the library independently.
  • Students are given a card for entry to the Bill Bryson Library so that they can visit to use it again. Please note, students must bring their card with them to access the library in future.
  • There is no access to the libraries for non-Durham University students during busy periods - October, April and May.
  • Please consider other library users during your visit.  There are dedicated areas of the building set aside for phone calls and the consumption of food and drinks.
  • When visiting us on-site for a Research Skills session, please meet us outside the main entrance of the Bill Bryson Library.

Online Session:

It is possible to complete the Research Skills session as an online session. However, the Library Induction can only be completed on-site. The content is the same as the on-site lecture and will last approximately 50 minutes. There is no charge for this session
