The Science Transformation Programme (STP) 

Overview: 

The Science Transformation Programme (STP) is a strategic initiative at Durham University designed to strengthen our position as a globally recognised leader in scientific research and education. This programme builds on our rich heritage and excellence in fundamental science to advance interdisciplinary, translational research that addresses critical global challenges.  

The STP Objectives: 

The STP is focused on: 

  • Advancing interdisciplinary research to address complex societal challenges.  
  • Enhancing translational science to ensure research delivers real-word impact. 
  • Developing strategic partnerships with industry, government and public sector organisations. 
  • Driving sustainable growth in research funding and income generation. 
  • Creating a supportive research culture that fosters collaboration and innovation.  

Research Themes and Focus Areas 

STP prioritises interdisciplinary research in strategically important areas, including: 

  • Energy Futures – Research into industrial decarbonisation, geothermal energy, and fusion energy in collaboration with leading organisations.  
  • Quantum & Advanced Sensing- Cutting edge projects surrounding the application of quantum technologies in extreme environments.  
  • Critical Resources & Infrastructure – Addressing sustainability challenges in resource management and infrastructure development. 
  • Molecular & Health Sciences – Innovations in medical and life sciences for societal benefit.  
  • Data Science, AI & Robotics- Leveraging emerging technologies for scientific advancement and problem-solving.  

Building Strong Partnerships 

Collaboration is at the hearth of the STP. The programme actively engages with industrial, governmental, and research partners to: 

  • Develop multi-disciplinary research projects with real-world applications.
