Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is a time to remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution and in the genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Darfur and elsewhere.

HMD is observed on the 27^th January as this marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birhenaun, which was the largest Nazi concentration camp.

HMD Events

13:00 – Holocaust survivor Uri Winterstein’s story

As part of Durham County Council’s events for HMD Uri Winterstein will talk about his families experiences during World war II. There will also be poems about the Holocaust written by pupils of County Durham Schools. For more information and to watch the event live please click here.

18:45 – Stephenson College’s in person rememberance event,

Students from our Jewish Society will read a poem and hold a minutes silence, lighting electric candles before streaming the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s ceremony. This event is for University students only.

Light a candle and safely put it in your window at 8pm to remember those who were murdered for who they were. Stand against prejudice today.
