The following information applies to full-time postgraduate students only who will begin their studies in September/October 2021, and wish to secure college accommodation.
Durham University has a number of single study bedrooms available for postgraduate students.
To apply for college accommodation you must have:
Applicants who apply for membership with accommodation will be contacted from late July time with an accommodation offer. This will be after you receive confirmation of your college allocation for membership. Offers will continue to be made to applicants from late July and throughout the summer. A deadline date will be provided in order to accept the accommodation offer.
We will always try to provide applicants with accommodation in their allocated college and meet facilities preferences, where possible. You may however be offered accommodation in another college where there is availability.
If you are offered accommodation in another college and choose to accept it, then your college membership will be transferred. This is because you must have a membership at the college that you will live in.
Subject to availability, Durham provides an offer of accommodation to applicants who are eligible to apply for, and wish to live in our colleges.
In order to accept and secure this offer, you must pay a portion of your accommodation charges in advance. A payment of £400 Advanced Rent is required to secure the offer of accommodation. A deadline date will be given to you within your accommodation offer in order to secure this.
The Advanced Rent payment is offset from the first termly instalment of the overall accommodation charges and is non-refundable*.
Making this payment will mean that you agree to all terms and conditions, and will secure the single study bedroom for college accommodation specified with an accommodation Particulars of Offer.
The period of occupancy the £400 Advanced Rent covers will vary depending upon the different catering and room types we provide, and for the specific college that you will live in. Below provides detail of the total number of days for each accommodation type:
Please note: Accommodation charges and occupancy periods may vary at the two recognised colleges. These are St Chad's College and St John'sSt John's College College.
You have the decision whether you want to accept or decline the accommodation offer provided to you. If you choose not to accept the accommodation offer, you will still remain a member of a college but you will need to then secure private accommodation instead. Only one offer of accommodation will be sent to each applicant.
*Advanced Rent is deemed non-refundable. There may however be exceptional circumstances considered by the Accommodation and Allocations Office where this may be possible. Details can be found here.
There is limited university accommodation available for students bringing their partners or families to Durham. Keenan House at Dryburn Court, about 1 mile north-east of the city centre, contains 70 one, two and three bedroom flats.
We regret that we are unable to offer a guarantee of accommodation to family applicants as demand always exceeds availability. Early applications are strongly advised.
