Congratulations and Welcome to New Students

Welcome from the Principal

May I, on behalf of everyone at Collingwood, congratulate you on your examination successes, your offer of a place at Durham, and, of course, your impending membership of our College.

It is hard to explain how important College life is to our students and staff. Collingwood's motto is "Love the Best" and your experiences here will help you to be the best you can be, given your own unique constellation of interests, talents and ambitions. For you personally, fulfilling your potential may involve going beyond the pursuit of academic excellence, to playing for a Collingwood second or third team (although in some sports this is still pretty stellar - we have, for example, sixteen men's and women's football teams and seven netball teams), participating in College drama productions, contributing to voluntary work in local or international community settings, taking advantage of internship and other professional opportunities, developing your skills in music, film, dance or art, or participating in student representation and governance.

I don’t want to dwell on the impact of Covid here – you’ll be receiving much detailed information on this important issue from the College and the University. However, I do want to stress that, as we did throughout the height of the pandemic last academic year, we are working hard to maximise your safety and, of course, to provide access to Collingwood’s amazing facilities. These include a state of the art theatre, gym, JCR, yoga/rowing studio, floodlit football pitch, film editing suite, cricket nets, and a fully refurbished College Bar... all kitted out with very high spec. equipment.

Collingwood is often accurately described as "full-on" so I hope that you will all have enjoyed some rest and relaxation this summer. Please prepare yourself for a highly stimulating and enjoyable first year. I look forward to welcoming you to Durham and having you join us as a lifelong member of our community, known to all as "The Wood".

With all best wishes,

Joe Elliott

When I arrived at Collingwood, I knew I was going to make friends, join societies and work on my degree. What I hadn’t realised was that I would become part of an amazing community that cares for every single one of its members, building everyone up to be the best version of themselves! If you embrace it, Collingwood will leave its mark on you forever! I can't wait to meet you all and for you to experience what we have in store for your Freshers Week!

Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
