A PUBLIC LECTURE BY: DR. PHILIP GOFF DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY DURHAM UNIVERSITY
In the standard view, consciousness exists only in the brains of highly evolved
organisms and hence only in a tiny part of the universe at late times. In contrast,
according to panpsychism, consciousness pervades the universe and is a fundamental
feature of it. This view sounds strange but a growing number of philosophers and
neuroscientists are starting to think it might be our best hope for integrating
consciousness into a scientific story of the universe. In this talk, based on his book
“Galileo’s Error: Foundations for a New Science of Consciousness”, Dr. Goff explains why
consciousness poses a challenge for science and why panpsychism might be the answer.
