Archives and Special Collections Experience Day

During the day, you will get hands-on experience of what skills and knowledge we need to do our jobs, and of course, find out for yourself what it is we do all day! 

When: Monday 11 March 2024, 9:15am - 4.30pm

Where: Palace Green Library, Palace Green, Durham, DH1 3RN 

Please note that one session is held in a room that is only accessible via two flights of stairs. If you have any concerns about access, please get in touch with us via the email address above and we will do our best to make alternative arrangements.

What: You will get a flavour of what it is like working in an archives and special collections environment. You will also encounter people in a variety of roles and have an opportunity to ask questions about their job and about their career journey. Most of all, you will have the opportunity to work closely with one of our collections for the day.

Who is it for? The experience day is open to Durham University undergraduate and postgraduate students.

How do I apply?

To give everyone the best experience, we limit the number of participants to 10.

If you are interested in joining us, please send us an email at pg.library@durham.ac.uk by 12noon (GMT) on Monday 19 February 2024 with the following information:

• Why you are interested in a career in archives and special collection (maximum 150 words)
• What you hope to get out of the day (max 100 words)
• Where you saw the experience day advertised

We will make a selection based on the strongest application statements. 

Successful candidates will be notified on Thursday 22 February, where you will also be sent more information about the day.

We run an experience day every term, so if you are unsuccessful this time or unable to join us on 11 March, there will be other opportunities.
