Course details

This Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme is designed for teachers working in international schools or other multicultural educational settings. 

Delivered by the School of Education at Durham University, the course provides opportunities to critically explore models of teaching and learning in internationalised contexts and their theoretical underpinnings. Participants will join a dynamic international cohort of teachers and benefit from the expertise of world-leading researchers and an outstanding academic department. 

The programme begins with a 5-day interactive online conference, combining lectures, seminars, and peer discussions, followed by structured support throughout the year to complete a credit-bearing assignment.

The course covers: 

  • Research evidence on classroom strategies for effective teaching and learning, particularly in international and multicultural contexts. 
  • The teacher as reflective practitioner, with a focus on contextualisation in education. 
  • Teaching for understanding in diverse and multicultural settings. 
  • Creative dimensions of teaching and learning in international schools. 
  • The teacher as researcher, critically engaging with theoretical models relevant to internationalised education.

 The structure of the programme encourages participants to link theory to practice and to reflect on their own professional contexts. 

Assessment

The assessment for this CPD programme is a 5,000-word written assignment at Master’s level.  

The essay requires participants to: 

  • Critically engage with theories and models of teaching and learning in internationalised and multicultural contexts. 
  • Demonstrate the application of research evidence to professional practice. 
  • Reflect on their own role as a teacher, researcher, and reflective practitioner. 
  • Analyse issues of contextualisation, creativity, and understanding in relation to international education. 

Assessment support includes: 

  • Three one-to-one online tutorials with your designated tutor. 
  • Opportunities for peer feedback and discussion during the conference. 

Successful completion of the assignment confers 30 credits at Master’s level. These credits can be transferred into an MA Education (part-time and online study routes are available) or a related postgraduate qualification. 

Entry requirements

We typically require a 2:2 Bachelor (Honours) degree (or overseas equivalent) in any subject.

A personal statement should include an outline of your interest and understanding of your chosen programme


Alternative qualifications

International students who do not meet direct entry requirements for this degree might have the option to complete an International Foundation Year.

Home students who do not meet our direct entry requirements, may be eligible for our Foundation Programme which offers multidisciplinary programmes to prepare you for a range of specified degree programmes.
