A delegation of 37 representatives from Uppsala and Durham University

On 11-12 May 2023, a delegation of 37 representatives from Uppsala University's (UU) Faculty Office for Humanities and Social Sciences visited Durham.

The two-day visit incorporated interactive workshops led by colleagues from our faculties and Professional Services teams that were aligned to the areas of work of UU's visitors. These included supporting international research collaboration, new programme development, administrative support for university committees and recruitment processes.

Strategic partners

Our global strategy prioritises our engagement with European partners with the aim of increasing opportunities for our staff and students to collaborate and engage with Europe. We formalised our partnership with UU in February 2020 with the signing of an institution-wide Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Our collaboration dates back many years and builds upon a successful track record of student exchange, a precedent for research collaboration as well as membership of the Matariki and Coimbra Group international networks.

Broadening our partnership

On 27-28 February 2023, our Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Global) visited UU to renew our successful partnership for a further five years. This reaffirmed our commitment to broadening our partnership and exploring further areas of collaboration, including a joint Strategic Development Fund, an environmental humanities delegation and research into a PGT programme on the theme of Sustainability in Cultural Geographies and Economic History.

A partnership with positive impact

Since 2019, UU and DU have funded 20 collaborative projects via the Uppsala-Durham Strategic Development Fund, focusing on areas such as Climate Change; Energy and Clean Growth; Heritage and Culture; Hazard and Risk; Data Science. These projects are already generating impact. As a result of the Strategic Development Fund, DU and UU secured awards from the Swedish Research Council (approx. £930,000) and Marklund (approx. £240k) to support ongoing collaborations related to the decarbonisation of energy and knowledge based de novo protein.
