atom bank 17

We have a strong track record of partnerships on key research initiatives to explore and drive innovation, including two Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP).

This has resulted in the creation of the Atom Bank Digital Twin; an end-to-end banking model based on mathematical and statistical methods.

Supporting finance with maths

Our pioneering statisticians have developed novel mathematical and statistical methods that are being used to support business decisions in financial planning, resourcing, product pricing and funding.

This case study was recently highlighted in the University Research Excellence Framework 2021.

Collaborative research

We have signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Atom Bank.

Our partnership with Atom Bank will see us carry out collaborative research that addresses longer term opportunities and challenges facing both organisations and wider society, such as climate change.

We have a wide range of work being planned including:

  • Developing people and creating learning opportunities.
  • Building on the EPSRC Northern Power Diversity Matters project which was sponsored by Atom and resulted in a toolkit for employers and academia.
  • Co-developing a programme for boosting participation in higher education among students from under-represented communities.
  • Continuing our partnership to launch and grow the Durham University Maths School with the Durham Sixth Form Centre.

We are also working together to develop key initiatives in data science, risk analysis, as well as a focus on sustainable communities and protecting the environment.
