Congratulations to Professor Jon Gluyas who has been elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of India.

The award, made by the Council of the Geological Society of India, recognises Jon’s significant contributions in geoenergy delivery, technology and research, as well as carbon capture and storage.

Jon’s work with Indian scientists in these areas is opening up new opportunities.

The Geological Society of India promotes the cause of advanced studies and research in all branches of Earth Systems Science.

Europe’s first Chair in Geoenergy

Jon is a renowned geologist with 42 years’ experience in industry and academia and he was the first professor in Europe to hold a Chair in Geoenergy, Carbon Capture and Storage.

Jon has had many roles in professional societies, including President of the Petroleum (now GeoEnergy) Society of Great Britain and the Earth Science Teachers’ Association, Chairman of the British Geological Survey Board, Chairman of the County Durham Climate Emergency Strategy Committee and President of the Geothermal Energy Advancement Association. 

This has culminated in Jon becoming the President-designate of The Geological Society, taking up this role in June 2024 for two years.

Jon’s research looks at the shift from fossil fuels to zero carbon energy resources.

He has been instrumental in forming and building an international research collaboration to identify natural reservoirs of hydrogen and helium throughout the world. This award-winning research is an important initial step towards the development of commercially viable zero carbon alternatives to oil and gas.

Ultra-low carbon alternatives

Under Jon’s leadership, our Durham Energy Institute has spearheaded research into the technological, geological and societal aspect of moving from fossil fuels to ultra-low carbon alternatives.

This includes research into geothermal energy, a natural, underground heat source, which could provide sustainable, carbon-neutral heating and cooling for large areas of the UK. Jon is President of Global Geothermal Energy Advancement Association.
