The purpose of this Briefing is to serve as an introduction to the recent crisis on the island of Timor, and to provide a background to the history of the international boundary between Indonesia and the most recent addition to the international community, the independent East Timor. This analysis provides an insight into the relevant historical, geopolitical, resource and functional factors applying to, and at, the boundary between these neighbours, dating back to the period of the Dutch and Portuguese colonists.
