Blackfrairs Lecture

SPEAKER:

Dr Adrian Green (Department of History, Durham University)

LECTURE:

Adrian's talk will explore Blackfriars itself, and its immediate history after the Middle Ages:

Blackfriars and the Newcastle Craft Guilds

The monastic buildings of Blackfriars were converted after the Dissolution of the Monasteries into meeting halls for some of Newcastle’s craft guilds. This talk looks at how the architecture of Blackfriars was adapted by the guilds, and relates the building to the other guild meeting halls around the town. In addition to converting Blackfriars, several guilds had meeting rooms in the towers of the town wall and the grandest guild, the Merchant Adventurers, had splendid rooms in the Guildhall on the Quayside. Ceremonial processions around the town linked all these meeting halls. This talk looks at the impressive architecture created by the guilds in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
