Blackfrairs Lecture

As part of the Institute’s growing collaboration with Blackfriars Restaurant, Newcastle, we are pleased to announce that Giles Gasper is to deliver the Blackfriars New Year Lecture, ‘Eggs Benedict, Monks and Their Food,’ on Saturday 28 January.

Giles will discuss the diverse culinary views held by various religious groups in the medieval period, including a famous denunciation by Bernard of Clairvaux of the number of the dining habits if the monastery if Cluny, and their predilection for eggs. Broader themes of the symbolic and ideological significance of food within the medieval religious context will be explored, as well as some practical issues in food presentation and consumption.
