Aims

  • Through research- and practice-led teaching, this module will provide students with a solid understanding of environmental management theories, policies, and practices.
  • Using a range of UK and international case studies, many of which have global significance, the module will equip students with the skills needed to address real-world environmental challenges as professional environmental managers.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:

  • Understand the challenges and pressures on natural resources (water, air, land) and the role of environmental management for sustainable development and public health.
  • Understand and critically evaluate existing water, air and land quality management practices.
  • Understand the application of relevant environmental laws, policies, and regulatory frameworks in environmental management.

Subject-specific Skills:

  • Intellectual and practical skills which are essential for applying environmental management principles and methodologies to solve problems.
  • Interface with industry-relevant online tools, databases and datasets to evaluate environmental impacts, identify their sources, and inform mitigation measures.
  • Conduct and interpret aspects of environmental impact assessments for projects.

  • Prepare, process, interpret and present numerical data using appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Teamwork through group practical project(s)
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Skill in critically analysing and evaluating environmental data, policies, and/or practices

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • The module is delivered through a mixture of lectures and practicals, supported by directed reading, and feedback during the practical classes.
  • Practical exercises will enable students to develop advanced analytical skills, practical experience related to environmental management and the further development of concepts core to the subject. These will require students to process, interpret and present data using appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Formative feedback will be given during practical sessions to aid students in developing best practices for applying newly gained environmental management skills.
  • Summative assessment is a 100% class test at the end of the Term.
  • The class test will be a mixture of short answer and problem-solving exercises relating to the lectures and practicals delivered during the Term .
