Aims

  • The aim of this module is to teach students how to apply psychological theories and research to organisational contexts (e.g., education, health, and other workplaces). A key aspect of the module is how organisations can promote equity, diversity, and inclusion and apply their knowledge appropriately in their own personal and professional practice.

Content

  • This module focuses on understanding psychological theories of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and examines how people think, feel, and act in organisational settings, such as workplaces. Indicative content may include different attitudes (e.g., job satisfaction) and behaviours at work; leadership; well-being; performance; equity, diversity, and inclusivity is considered throughout and is a key component of this module.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:

  • A nuanced understanding of an aspect of equity, diversity, and inclusivity and the ability to apply psychological understanding of that aspect to an organisational context.
  • Detailed knowledge of a range of theories, relevant topics, and methods in the fields of business, work, and organisational psychology.

Subject-specific Skills:

  • Ability to review critically and consolidate understanding of a coherent body of psychological knowledge and apply it appropriately.

Key Skills:

  • Good written, IT, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work semi-autonomously in scholarship and research.
  • Ability to convey psychological concepts to different audiences.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Students' acquisition of detailed knowledge and understanding will be facilitated by within-lecture interactive elements such as discussion and small group work, online media, and supplementary reading. These modes of teaching provide students with detailed knowledge of the key topics and the skills needed to critically evaluate evidence and understand potential applications.
  • Both summative assessments will assess the skills learning outcomes.
  • With regards to the subject specific learning outcomes, one of the essays will incorporate reflective writing and focus on understanding equity, diversity, and inclusivity in an organisational context (subject-specific learning outcome 1).
  • The other essay will assess detailed knowledge of theories and topics that pertain to organisational psychology (subject-specific learning outcome 2).
