Prerequisites

  • Spanish Language 1A (SPAN1011) or equivalent.

Corequisites

  • At least one additional level 2 module in Hispanic Studies

Aims

  • In year 2 students improve and expand their written and oral skills, expanding on the foundation of grammatical and syntactical accuracy consolidated at Level 1, so as to explore more sophisticated modes of verbal expression and variety of linguistic registers.

Content

  • This module builds on the skills acquired in Spanish language 1A and will involve the further development and consolidation of writing, speaking and comprehension skills in Spanish.
  • The teaching and resources in this module reflect a commitment to linguistic and cultural diversity. It positions the richness of the (language area)-speaking world at the core of its syllabus.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:

  • Students should have acquired a greater knowledge of Hispanic culture and an increased awareness of cultural issues.

Subject-specific Skills:

  • To improve their written and oral skills, expanding on the foundation of grammatical and syntactical accuracy consolidated at Level 1, so as to explore more sophisticated modes of verbal expression and a variety of linguistic registers.

Key Skills:

  • Further develop general written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to discuss topical or general issues with fluency.
  • The ability to gather and process information and evidence from a variety of different sources.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • The teaching will consist of two one-hour classes per week. Classes will be conducted in Spanish and the module will follow the format of the textbook Pasaporte al mundo hispano.
  • Students will take part in debates and discussions, participate in listening-comprehension and translation exercises, and prepare short texts and grammatical exercises for correction in the class.
  • Students will gain the ability to present information and/or construct an argument effectively in the target language.
