Butler Cares is a new initiative ensuring every student can thrive, offering vital financial support and practical help in times of need. Join us in backing this transformative programme and help make a real difference. Our community is already coming together, with a coast-to-coast cycle and an upcoming Three Peaks hike leading the way to raise vital funds.

In 2025, Josephine Butler College proudly launched Butler Cares, a transformative funding initiative designed to support students facing significant personal and financial challenges. Inspired by the enduring legacy of Josephine Butler—a pioneering advocate for social justice—the programme aims to ensure that every student, regardless of their background or circumstances, has the opportunity to thrive both academically and personally.

What is Butler Cares?

Butler Cares is more than just a hardship fund. It is a comprehensive support system that provides targeted financial assistance to students in need. Whether it’s helping with emergency travel, funding essential, or supporting care-experienced and estranged students, Butler Cares is committed to removing the barriers that can hinder student success.

The programme also includes the Instant Access Hardship Fund, which delivers rapid financial relief in urgent situations, and will re-establish the college’s laptop loan scheme to ensure digital access for all.

The initiative reflects the college’s deep commitment to equity, compassion, and community—values that Josephine Butler herself championed throughout her life.

The programme has already entered a soft launch phase, with funds being distributed on a case-by-case basis since February 2025. This “test and learn” approach has allowed the college to refine its processes and ensure a responsive, student-centred model.

Fundraising in Action: Two Challenges, One Cause

To help sustain and grow Butler Cares, the college has set an ambitious fundraising target of £75,000 by July 2027. Two major fundraising efforts are already energising the Butler community.

Coast-to-Coast Launch Ride

The fundraising campaign was officially launched in early June with an inspiring Coast-to-Coast cycle ride across England. The team—Josh Tang (Butler alumnus), Aston Burdett (Butler 1st year), Mike Cheung (JCR Vice President), and Jamie Samuel (MCR President)—cycled over 140 miles from the Irish Sea to the North Sea to raise awareness and funds for Butler Cares.

Their crowdfunding page has already raised vital support, and their return to college was timed to coincide with Butler Day, making it a memorable and meaningful launch to the campaign.

The 3 Peaks Challenge – Coming Soon

At the end of June, three of the college’s senior leaders—Gill (Principal), Harriet (Vice-Principal), and Jen (Assistant Principal)—will take on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge, climbing Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough in under 12 hours. Covering 24 miles and 1,585 metres of ascent, the trio is pushing themselves to the limit to continue the momentum of the fundraising campaign. Their JustGiving campaign is already gaining support, with nearly £2,000 raised so far.

How You Can Help

Butler Cares is built on the idea of collective impact. While the college does not have access to large individual donors, it boasts a vibrant community of over 1,500 current students and 7,000 alumni. By contributing small amounts—whether through donations, fundraising events, or simply spreading the word—everyone can play a part in making a big difference.

Students, staff, alumni, and supporters are encouraged to:

  • Donate to the 3 Peaks Challenge or Coast-to-Coast fundraiser here: Butler Cares 3 Peaks Challenge - JustGiving

  • Organise or participate in their own fundraising challenges

  • Share the campaign on social media and within their networks
