Accommodation and Catering

St Mary’s is a catered only College offering accommodation to a diverse community.

We currently have 309 rooms in College. We offer accommodation to all our first year undergraduate students (around 220 students) and the remaining rooms are used by second, third and fourth year undergraduates, and taught and research postgraduates.

Our Accommodation

Rooms for new undergraduate students are allocated by the Vice-Principal with the help of the JCR President and are based on the information provided by new students on their room questionnaire, which is included in the College induction pack sent out in August.

All study bedrooms are furnished with a single bed, under bed storage, a wardrobe, desk, shelves and a basin. All rooms have wi-fi.

The majority of first-year undergraduates will be allocated to a standard room with shared bathroom facilities on their corridor. The College has a small number of en-suite rooms which are reserved for returning undergraduates, postgraduates, and those students whose circumstances require en-suite facilities. We have two bedrooms with wet rooms for those students who require this type of accommodation.

The College used to operate a room ballot for first-year undergraduates, which involved moving room every term, but this is no longer the case and students normally remain in their allocated room for the full academic year. The College typically offers standard lets for its accommodation, which means that students can remain in their rooms over the Christmas and Easter vacations (although there is no catering during the vacations)

Each corridor has a pantry area (small kitchens with fridge, kettle and toaster) and communal toilet and shower facilities. The number of rooms on each corridor varies. Some corridors may have as few as 6 rooms, whilst others may have up to 24 rooms. Corridors are normally mixed but the College does offer accommodation to female students requiring female-only accommodation in the Boughton Wing.

Communal areas and study bedrooms are cleaned by the College cleaning team on a regular basis but students are responsible for keeping their rooms and the communal areas tidy.

Second and Final Year Students

Many students choose to live in rented accommodation around the City in their second year.

There is plenty of private rental accommodation in the City for those who choose to live out after their first year and you will receive help and advice on house-hunting from the JCR and Durham Students’ Union. Many finalists choose to live in College as catered accommodation is more convenient and means they can concentrate on their degree work.

The College welcomes applications for accommodation from all years and second, third and fourth year undergraduates are able to choose which room they want to live in before the start of the new academic year.

New full-time undergraduate students who have met the conditions of their offer and have returned their AS12 reply confirming that they wish to take-up their place at Durham will be provided with College-managed accommodation. Undergraduate students do not need to do anything about accommodation before the A-Level results are published and those confirming their place will be sent the appropriate accommodation forms to complete. A link to an online licence agreement will be sent to you prior to your arrival which you must sign to secure your accommodation.

Some students will be allocated to a room that is part of the University’s “buy-back” scheme, which operates in order for us to be able to operate our residential post-offer visit days. Students allocated to a buy-back room will be informed and will be reimbursed for the nights that their room is required.

Erasmus students are provided with membership of a College but not guaranteed College accommodation.
