Step into the shadows this spooky season as Dr Fraser Riddell and Ushaw College host a screening of Kwaidan (1964) – Masaki Kobayashi’s haunting masterpiece of Japanese cinema, based on stories from Lafcadio Hearn’s collections of Japanese folk tales.
This cult horror classic weaves together ghostly tales of love, loss, and the supernatural, its striking visuals and eerie atmosphere earning it a place in film history. Perfectly timed for autumn chills, Kwaidan is the ideal companion to the exhibition Kwaidan: Encounters with Lafcadio Hearn. Ushaw is the first to host the first showing of Kwaidan: Encounters with Lafcadio Hearn in the United Kingdom, featuring 40 individual prints from artists in response to the ghost stories and lots more!
Starting from 6pm, the event will be introduced by Dr Fraser Riddell from the Department of English Studies at Durham University, who will explore how Kobayashi adapted and transformed Lafcadio Hearn’s tales of terror for the big screen.
Kwaidan (1964) will be screened from 6:30pm and will finish at 9:30pm. Please be aware, this film is rated 15.
