This seminar will explore the European Union’s evolving role in ensuring accountability for core international crimes against the backdrop of recent legal developments and geopolitical crises. While traditionally less visible, the EU has intensified its activities and cooperation with international and national actors in the field of international criminal justice. Developments, such as Eurojust’s enhanced mandate and support for a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine, illustrate the EU’s growing contribution to combating impunity.
After looking back at its past efforts, the presentation will highlight the changes that occurred since 2015, with a critical appraisal of the EU's response over time. It will conclude by addressing whether the EU answers the expectations that are now placed upon it.
