The Department of Sociology is committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in all areas of our teaching and research.
Studying, researching and understanding individual experiences and wider social structures, including experiences of discrimination and oppression, and how we reduce inequalities and build fairer societies, are central to sociology, criminology, and social work.
Within the Department, we seek to promote equality of opportunity for all our students and staff, to promote diversity, to provide an inclusive environment and to eliminate any form of bullying, harassment or discrimination. We aim to ensure that EDI principles are integrated into everything that we do.

The Department’s EDI Committee is responsible for embedding the principles of EDI into its daily operations and shaping and influencing policy and practice across teaching, research, operations and broader workplace culture (including citizenship).
The EDI Committee meets termly and has a membership including representatives from across research, teaching, and professional services, as well as Student Voice.
The EDI Committee is chaired by the EDI Director, who reports on behalf of the EDI Committee at each Board of Studies meeting and sits on the Department’s Management Group. The current EDI Director is Dr James Rowlands.
The Department’s Athena Swan lead is Jess Stacey (Sociology Department Manager).
