On 17 March 2020, all our Visitor Attraction venues temporarily closed their doors to the public due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our Museums, Galleries and Exhibitions team were faced with a real challenge; how could visitor engagement with our collections continue when we couldn’t allow public access to any of our venues?

The team responded by developing a programme of exciting and innovative online exhibitions, bringing our collections and historic buildings to audiences worldwide.

With a range of exhibitions from across our venues, including Treasures of Palace Green Library, The History of Durham CastleTaxila in Focus: 100 Years since Marshall and the Student Art Prize 2020/2021, we have welcomed an amazing 21,500 visitors to our online spaces since August 2020.

In addition, this platform has created further opportunities for our student body; working with postgraduate students to launch online exhibitions as part of their assessments and giving the opportunity to individual students to create their own exhibitions through their interests and experiences.
