"I studied two specialised languages and undertook a work placement and also chose to audit several other cultural and theory-based modules because they were too interesting to miss out on! I am joining the Civil Service Fast Stream with a view to gaining invaluable experience and vocabulary that will enable me to specialise as a professional translator in the future.”

A world of career opportunities

Our courses will provide you with an impressive and unique portfolio of cultural knowledge, transferable skills and placement experiences, valued by employers worldwide. Our graduates have gone on to careers in interpreting, translation and teaching, industry, business, marketing, finance, the civil service, the European Union agencies, law and the media.

Statistics from the Higher Education Statistics Agency reveal that language graduates are on average 10-15% better paid than other arts graduates and have the lowest unemployment rates overall (only outdone by those in medicine and law). In particular, the Year Abroad, which is an integral part of all our degree programmes, will give you a head start in the job market.

"I joined the MA Translation Studies after nearly four years in Japan. I had a purely practical background in language and translation and so I chose options such as the work placement module and intercultural project management with ethics. However, I quickly realised that I was enjoying translation theory and transcultural modules so much so that I even audited the Crossing Cultures module half-way through the year because I had to know more."
