COP26+1 : The countdown to 2030

Cast your mind back to the 1st of November 2021 when we met at Beamish Hall Hotel for Durham's COP 26. We discussed the Councils newest, developing Climate Emergency Response Plan 2, heard from excellent speakers such as Tony Cleary from Lanchester Wines, Sue Jacques CEO of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust and we launched our Climate Agreement.

A whole year has now passed and as we countdown to 2030 we want to come together once again to see how we have turned our climate talk into climate action and ask who is going to pay for this transition?

This year’s event will build on Durham’s COP26 conference,  activities since then, and bring in Durham University researchers from the Durham Energy Institute, the Durham Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy, and the Durham Centre for Environmental and Energy Economics, to explore how research supports local climate action. How can our own local “stocktake” be informed through Durham University’s research, and how are we placed within the perspective of the “Global Stocktake” under the Paris Agreement?

The day will begin at 9am sharp and our first keynote speaker, James Close, Head of Climate Change at NatWest Group and Durham University Alumnus, will follow brief introductions. Throughout the day you will also hear from Prof Claire O'Malley, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Durham University and Andrew Clark Regional Lead - Energy at the Net Zero Hub,  Prof Jon Gluyas, the Executive Director of the Durham Energy Institute and Prof Petra Minnerop, Director of the Durham Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy, as well as local businesses who have taken climate action.

The half day event will be jam packed with exciting talks and chances to ask Local and national climate leaders your questions.

Though the formal part of the day ends at 2 pm, there will be the opportunity to participate in workshops, hosted by representatives from Durham University, which will further explore the challenges we face and how working together can improve collective climate action.
