Recruitment to funded PhD Scholarships with the Aura CDT are now open until the 12th July 2023. Durham University is a partner and Scholarships are available for students to be based in Durham, as well as the other partner institutions. PhDs should focus on Offshore Wind and the Environment.

Funded PhD scholarships in offshore wind energy and the environment for 2023 start.

The offshore wind industry is a new and exciting industrial sector to join. It is already providing over 10% of the UK’s electricity and is growing at an unprecedented rate - by 2030, it is expected to provide 30% of the UK's energy needs.

We’re looking for the world’s brightest minds to join us in developing cutting edge research and find solutions to the environmental and engineering challenges the offshore wind industry is facing.

The EPSRC Aura Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Offshore Wind Energy and the Environment is led by the Energy and Environment Institute at the University of Hull with partner universities Durham, Newcastle and Sheffield. We work closely with over 20 international industry partners, including Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult.

The Aura CDT invites high-quality applications from exceptional graduates for 4-year taught and research PhD scholarships starting September 2023.

Your research could make a real impact to the exciting challenges in the offshore wind industry.

You will initially study in Hull, in the heart of the UK’s Energy Estuary, and the global centre for research, innovation and development for the sector.

In subsequent years, candidates may be based at one of the partner universities of Hull, Durham, Newcastle or Sheffield and get real sector experience with the industry partners mapped to your chosen area of research.

These funded PhD opportunities are available to UK students - in addition, a number of scholarships are available at Hull for International students - all subject to EPSRC eligibility.

PhD Research Themes:

- Physics and Engineering of the offshore environment;

- Environmental impact, marine biology and aquaculture;

- Next generation materials and manufacturing;

- Operations, maintenance and human factors;

- Offshore wind energy integration: challenges and impacts;

- Big data, sensors and digitalisation for the offshore environment.
