CSJCA Annual Event, Participatory Practices for Transforming Racial and Cultural Hierarchies: Potential and Limitations

The global pandemic has (re)exposed the longstanding inequalities and uneven distributions of health and wealth in societies. While there is a lot to be positive about in the rejuvenation of community in dealing with the pandemic’s impact, we are also alarmed by the rise of nationalism which is fuelling hatred, violence and intimidation towards racial and cultural ‘others’. What emerges as an urgent priority for racial and cultural justice is the promotion of ‘care’ and connections across difference and distance. In this event, we explore the potential and limitations of participatory practices for addressing legacies of colonialism and white supremacy in our everyday lives and in research, and the way these intersect with other hierarchies such as gender and class.
