CVAC Welcome and programme launch 2024-2025

We are excited to invite you to the Durham CVAC welcome and programme launch for 2024-2025!

This is a chance for our students, staff and associated colleagues across the university and beyond to connect, share some refreshments, and hear about our 2024-25 programme.  Join us to hear about our upcoming research events, student training opportunities, seminars and workshops exploring the power and methodological practice of visual techniques, creative and analytical practices, and visual storytelling.

For this year's programme welcome we are delighted to host a book launch,  'With love from an invader' by Yan Wang Preston.

The role of CVAC

The Centre for Visual Arts and Culture stimulates, strengthens and supports research in visual culture at Durham University and beyond. 

Our aims: 

1. Fostering an enthusiastic community of cross-disciplinary researchers on all aspects of visual culture and the arts, at Durham University and beyond
2. Developing the next generation of researchers and practitioners through training events and other initiatives, in a welcoming, inclusive environment
3. Supporting research impact by connecting researchers with peers and partners in the arts, culture, and heritage, including archives and museums

CVAC’s collaborative 'Visual Methods' programme for this coming academic year offers a chance to reflect on and develop your skills in visual methods and visual literacy, bringing together diverse expertise from colleagues across our departments, centres and institutes and beyond.  We will explore the possibilities and challenges of visual storytelling, including:

• Working creatively with visual materials
• Non-extractive film and image making
• Digital image making and processing
• Understanding how images 'act' on us and others who 'consume' them

There will also be opportunities to network with like-minded visual enthusiasts, and connect with a growing community of practice - where the seed ideas for future collaborations can find fertile ground.
