We are excited to invite you to the Durham CVAC welcome and programme launch for 2023-2024!

This is a chance for our students, staff and associated colleagues across the university and beyond to connect, share some refreshments, and hear about our 2023-24 programme.  We have compiled a series of seminars and workshops focussing on visual methods, exploring the power of visual techniques, creative and analytical practices, and visual storytelling.  Come along and be part of this!!

Our culture is visual to an unprecedented degree.  Images are everywhere, and we have come to accept this vast amount of visual data and information as normal, from Snapchat and Instagram to MRI scans and Echocardiograms.  These images are powerful, and work on us in particular ways - yet we are often barely aware of how they do this.  'Visual literacy' is hence an essential tool for researchers from every subject area and discipline, whether working with images as source materials, using images as part of the research process, or creating visualisations of data for communication and analysis.  At the same time, visual methods open up new ways of thinking, developing and disseminating research, new forms of collaboration, and new pathways to creativity and engagement.

CVAC’s programme for 2023-24 offers a chance to reflect on and develop your skills in visual methods and visual literacy.  Our collaborative programme for this year brings together diverse expertise from colleagues in our departments, centres and institutes and beyond.  We will explore the possibilities and challenges of visual storytelling, working creatively with visual materials, digital image processing, and routes to better understand how the images we make 'act' on us and others who 'consume' them.   There will also be opportunities to network with like-minded visual enthusiasts, and connect with a growing community of practice - where the seed ideas for future collaborations can find fertile ground.
