Visual Research and Photography: The Sudan Archive
A CVAC workshop with Francis Gotto and Christina Riggs
The Sudan Archive was founded at Durham University in 1957, the year after Sudan won its independence from Britain. It collects and preserves donations made by more than 400 individuals and organizations who lived or worked in Sudan and South Sudan during the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium (1898-1955), including members of the Sudan Political Service, missionaries, military officials, doctors, and engineers.
Photographic material in the Sudan Archive includes albums related to travel, leisure activities, and official responsibilities. The image above shows a coal felucca on the river Nile (Angus Cameron collection, Sudan Archive Durham (SAD.622/2/10) Copyright).
- What research themes and questions might emerge from this collection of photographic material, including approaches within a decolonizing framework?
Join archivist Francis Gotto (Palace Green Library) and Professor Christina Riggs (History) for this hands-on workshop event. Participants will learn more about this large collection, its contents and scope, and the cataloguing and digitization of visual materials. We hope this initial event will generate cross-disciplinary conversations, and encourage further research.
