What Happens to Your Application

Find out what happens to your application after you’ve submitted it, how applications are assessed and how you can check on the progress of your application through the Applicant Portal.

At Durham we consider all applications in line with our Postgraduate Admissions Policy. We aim to make decisions within 6-8 weeks of receiving your application, sometimes sooner, though decisions may take longer during very busy periods. After you’ve applied, your application will be considered by the appropriate Admissions Selector in the department. They will consider your qualifications, personal statement, research proposal and references.

Decisions and Replies for Postgraduate Research applications

When a decision is made on your application this will be one of the following:

  • Unconditional offer – this means that you have met all requirements for your chosen programme and we are offering you a place at Durham.
  • Conditional offer – we are offering you a place provided you meet certain conditions.  These will usually be that you achieve the qualification you are studying with a specific grade or score, but may also be that you provide evidence of your English language ability or satisfactory references.
  • Unsuccessful – unfortunately we aren’t able to offer you a place at this time.

All of our decisions are sent to you through the Applicant Portal.

If you have been made an offer, you can reply by logging in to the Applicant Portal and from the drop-down menu next to the application you have been made an offer for, choose ‘view offer’.

The Applicant Portal also has many other useful features which will help you during your journey with us, including:

  • Tracking the progress of your application
  • Uploading documents
  • Viewing alerts for any actions you may need to take
  • Viewing the conditions of your offer if you are made one
  • Accepting or declining your offer if you are made one
  • Seeing emails and other communications that have been sent to you
  • Amending or adding details of your referee, agent or nominated contact if required
  • Viewing a copy of your application form
  • Viewing our Frequently Asked Questions or ask us another question about your application or the University
  • Withdrawing your application.

You should visit the Applicant Portal regularly and explore the many features it offers.
