Before you apply

Do you offer any flexible roles?

Are you a member of the Disability Confident Scheme?

We’re are proud to be a Disability Confident employer here at Durham, and that means we’re committed to supporting applicants with disabilities through the recruitment process and once they join us. 

You’re recognised as disabled under the Equality Act 2010 if you have a physical or mental impairment that has a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ adverse effect on your ability to do normal daily activities.

So if you indicate that you’d like to be considered under the Disability Confident Scheme on your application and we consider that you meet all of the essential criteria for the role – you’re guaranteed an interview. 

Are you able to make reasonable adjustments?

Whats the University doing to monitor the diversity of applications?

Diversity is incredibly important to us, so we ask all of our applicants to complete the diversity monitoring information as part of their application. The information you give us is used to monitor data related to recruitment at Durham.

What if Im applying from an EU or non-EU country?

Since 1st January 2021, a new Immigration System has been in place. If you’re applying from an EU or non-EU country and need further details about immigration, we provide lots of information for international applicants.

After youve applied

Ive submitted my application. What happens next?

Even if you submit your application early, we won’t consider it until the closing date. The process for considering applications can be different for each role, but it’s usually outlined in the job description.

If you’ve applied for an academic role, the process typically involves longlisting candidates, reading submitted papers, and creating a shortlist. Shortlisted candidates are usually invited to the University for interviews which can last a day or more, and to meet colleagues (and often students) across the department.

If your application is not successful at any of these stages, we’ll let you know as soon as we can via email. Please make sure you check your junk/spam email folders.

When will I know if Ive got an interview?

We always try to give you as much notice as possible if we invite you to an interview. However, you should check the job advert when you apply and make a note of any interview dates that we provide.

If you’re not available for the provided interview date, let us know in your application so we can consider alternative arrangements. In some cases, we may be able to hold an interview through Zoom or MS Teams.

If we can’t arrange an alternative date, interviews will proceed on the planned dates. You may be offered an interview on another date if we don’t choose a candidate from the original round of interviews.

If we do invite you to an interview, we’d love to hear back from you confirming your attendance as soon as possible.

What happens if Im not successful?

If you have not been successful at any stage of the process, we’ll be in touch as soon as we can via email. Please make sure you check your junk/spam email folders.

We understand that applications take a lot of time and effort, but the volume of applications we receive means that we can’t provide feedback for everyone. Generally, we can only give feedback to those who’ve been interviewed but not offered the role.

Please don’t let this stop you from applying again if you see another role that suits your skills and experience.

If you get an interview

Ive been invited to an interview. What now?

Congratulations, and good luck! Your interview may take place on campus or online, via Zoom or Microsoft Teams, but we’ll let you know the process when we contact you.

You’re responsible for booking any travel or accommodation. However, you may be able to ask for reimbursement and you can find more details in our Expenses Policy Booklet [pdf 0.4MB].

What should I bring to my interview?

Make sure to bring your passport and qualifications. We’ll need the original documents as well as photocopies if possible.

Will you pay interview related expenses?

You’ll need to arrange and pay for any travel and accommodation, but as long as the expense adheres to our Expenses Policy Booklet [pdf 0.4MB] , you keep the receipt/ticket and you’ve completed our Interview Expenses Claim Form, we’ll reimburse any reasonable expenses.

What happens if Im successful?

We’ll let you know as soon as possible if you’ve been successful. This will usually happen by phone, but some departments use email so please make sure you check your junk/spam email folders.

We’ll then send you an offer of employment. This will be conditional on whether we receive satisfactory references, and that we’ve seen all the documents we need, such as your qualifications and right to work documents.
