Congratulations and Welcome to New Undergraduate Students

Susan Frenk

Welcome to St Aidan's, where I hope you will spend some of the happiest and most interesting years of your life. This is the rainbow College, a multicultural, multi-faith community, which is proud to host Durham Pride and Durham City of Sanctuary, the Centre for Sex, Gender and Sexualities, the Centre for Jewish Studies, the University Islamic chaplaincy and collaborations with artists, writers and social entrepreneurs across the region and the world. You will make lifelong friendships with people from all backgrounds, personalities and academic subjects, choosing your own pace in settings that range from quiet, informal encounters to imaginatively themed extravaganzas in the Dining Hall. Whether you decide to explore the cultural forums and Language Evenings, volunteer in local community engagement projects, develop new or familiar forms of expression in the Creative Writing Course or Arts activities, contribute your ideas and energies to annual celebrations like Chinese New Year or to our environmental Green Network or help to sustain our participation in a wide spectrum of sports, you will be encouraged and inspired. In Aidan's, staff and students work together in mutual respect aiming to create an atmosphere in which everyone can flourish. So take your time and enjoy settling into your new home.

Warm wishes,

Dr. Susan Frenk, Principal

On behalf of the student body, welcome to St Aidan's College, the best college in Durham! I'm Joe (he/him) and I'm the President of the St Aidan's Junior Common Room (SAJCR). The JCR is a student-run independent charity that represents the interests of the student body at college. We're a mini students' union right at the heart of Aidan's that's proudly by students, for students! We put on our own balls and socials; finance our own sports teams, organise student welfare services and support a range of student cultural and educational societies. If getting involved in any of that interests you, you can find me in my office or around college!

Joseph (Joe) Eaton
JCR President

Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
