Welcome to St Mary's

Here at St Mary’s we are known in Durham as being one of the friendliest colleges: wherever in the world and whatever background you are from, St Mary's will welcome you.

The Collegiate nature of Durham University provides its students (undergraduate and postgraduate) with the opportunity to live and study in small communities that support its individual members, academically, personally and socially – bringing the University experience to a more human scale.

We offer outstanding opportunities for academic and personal success in a caring environment. We are modern and dynamic in our outlook, encouraging our students to get involved with all that Durham has to offer, to whatever extent is right for them. We are all about supporting our students throughout the course of their studies to reach their academic and personal potential, and to prepare them for post-University life.

We also value our heritage and traditions: founded as a College for women at a time when women were not able to take University degrees, St Mary’s College has played an important part in the history of higher education in the UK and internationally. The principles of social justice and equality of opportunity upon which the College was founded are still as important to our mixed College community today as in 1899.

It is this positive experience of being a part of a supportive and caring academic community that leads so many of our students to retain a lifelong affiliation with St Mary’s, returning for many Alumni events and supporting our current student body.
