If you are interested in PhD research, we recommend directly contacting those academics working in your area of interest; you may find our staff profiles and research pages helpful. Do look out for links within these to find more about individual academics research – unlike at undergraduate level, your supervisor plays a key role and they are the best starting point for finding out more.
While there are various routes to funding your studies, some general guidance with key deadlines can be found on our postgraduate opportunities page. Again, individual supervisors may also be able to advise on suitability of different funding schemes. It is important to make contact early in the academic year, as some positions are allocated a long way in advance, and some schemes have specific deadlines (staring as early as the Autumn for the following October start). There are several schemes through the Science Faculty including thee EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award and Chinese Scholarship Council studentship – as these have with fixed deadlines for the department to put forward the best candidates, it is essential for you to be in touch with a supervisor in advance of deadlines for these schemes.
