The steam turbine and its future in a Net Zero world

Since its invention by the Hon. Sir Charles Algernon Parsons in 1884, the steam turbine has served as the main heat engine in the electric power generation business. But, as we move away from fossil sources to meet our ever-increasing demand for power, what does the future hold for the steam turbine in a Net Zero world? After almost 40 years working as a steam turbine designer, Phil will reflect on the way the business has evolved and consider how steam turbines may continue to play their part in keeping our lights on.

Speaker Bio

The speaker, Phil Peel, graduated in engineering from University College, Durham in 1985 with a B.Sc. in Engineering Science and a Masters in Turbomachinery. Phil has been a member of the IMechE since 1981, and became a Fellow in 2007. Phil has over 35 years of experience in the global power generation business. His career has focused on the development and design of large steam turbines, being based initially in Rugby, UK with GEC Turbine Generators and subsequently Alstom Power. Relocating to Switzerland in 2001, he led the development of new steam turbine technologies, advancing to the position of Chief Engineer in 2012, which he now holds with the current company owner, General Electric. In 2022 Phil was elected as 137th President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
