Durham University Solar Car

Durham University Solar Car is the longest running solar car team in the UK, pushing the boundaries of engineering for over two decades. Consisting of students from all backgrounds across the university, the team consistently generates brand new ideas and solutions to the challenges that faces them.

 “After many years of designing and building innovation for solar powered vehicles, Durham’s newest solar car has resulted in a shell so sleek it produces a drag similar to the wing mirror of a conventional car”. The driver is surrounded by a protective shell of Kevlar and Carbon fibre composites – as strong as steel but lighter than the standard road vehicle! The in-wheel electric motors use ultra-slim magnets and windings to improve efficiency by delivering more torque for less weight. Direct-drive in-wheel motors also eliminate the need for a drive train so less energy is lost to friction and yet again, more weight is saved!

Adrenaline runs high in the team as Durham's solar cars are raced across the world in some of the most challenging races. The remarkable vehicles are pushed to their limits where tough conditions become the ultimate testing grounds.

Dedication and determination is what has navigated the team thus far through diverse races such as the World Solar Challenge, Australia (Darwin to Adelaide, 6 day race), and the North American Solar Challenge.
