Emilia Russell STEM for Britain

Emilia Russell, a PhD student in the Department of Engineering, was selected as a finalist for the prestigious STEM for Britain 2025 competition.

In March, Emilia travelled to Westminster to present her research at the House of Commons as part of the national STEM for Britain exhibition – an annual event that showcases the work of early-career scientists, engineers, and mathematicians to Members of Parliament and policymakers.

Her poster, titled “Why Strained Semiconductors Are Like Crinkle Cut Crisps”, explored how strained semiconductors can be used to develop touch-sensitive synthetic skin for prosthetics – a technology with the potential to transform assistive devices and improve quality of life.

STEM for Britain is organised by the Parliamentary & Scientific Committee and aims to support and celebrate the best of early-career research in the UK. You can learn more about the event on the official website: https://www.stemforbritain.org.uk/

We are extremely proud of Emilia’s achievement and her contribution to making cutting-edge science more accessible to the public and policymakers.
