Moving between the New York School, Black Mountain College and the Beats, John Wieners is a unique figure in twentieth-century US poetry. Queer in both subject matter and style, his poems defy easy categorisation and anticipate a poetry that is both “inaccessibly personal and beyond individuality” (John Wilkinson).
