Expect fire and fear at Roaring Dragons

Head of a black dragon puppet with fierce yellow eyesEnjoy candlelight, myth, and audience participation as a bevy of dragons weave their magic around the audience!

This show is built around the exhibition Radical Dragons: Fearsome Beasts and the Making of the North East. The exhibition explains legends about regional dragons in the North East and their historical and political contexts.

Roaring Dragons will make the exhibition’s information panels come alive, as up to 10 individual dragons and their teams show off in the medieval halls of Brancepeth Castle, with music, pageantry, and pantomime.

Dragons are usually associated with a particular North East monster legend from the Viking times to the more recent past (e.g. the Lambton Worm, the Laidley Worm of Bamburgh Castle). Each of the dragons in this show has a characteristic temper and way of moving, but what they have in common is jealousy. A Town Crier will attempt to keep order, and invite you to be involved in deciding which dragon is the ultimate victor!

Tickets from £10 in advance. Each ticket includes wine and dragon-related snacks.

The following day (25th September) also sees the opportunity for families and children to meet the roaring dragons up close.
