Shortly after the UK went into its first lockdown against the COVID-19 pandemic, evidence began to emerge of differential impact on men and women and of disadvantages female academics faced in sustaining academic research and writing for publication. In 2021, Dr Kate Carruthers Thomas (Birmingham City University) carried out research investigating UK female academics’ experiences of working practices, career progression and academic identity during and post-COVID lockdown (Dear Diary: Equality implications for female academics of changes to working practices in lockdown and beyond ). Diary and interview data collected from 25 participants have been curated in an open access Illustrated Digital Archive (www.deardiaryresearch.co.uk ).
This interactive seminar builds on research findings and the experiences of seminar participants themselves, to consider issues for and ways of improving equality, diversity and inclusion practices within the university, post-pandemic. We'll use the Digital Archive content to prompt writing, reflection and discussion on themes of work/home and 'new normals'. This seminar is open to all staff and students of Durham University. Takes place on 29 June 2022, 13:00 – 15:00 in room TLC123.
