Navigating Time: Career Development Challenges of Chinese Nurses

This talk focuses on the career development of Chinese nurses through the lens of time. Drawing on biographical in-depth interviews with 30 female nurses aged between 45 and 60, our research identifies three pivotal timelines shaping a nurse’s professional journey – historical time, social time, and life time. The intersecting demands of these temporal dimensions pose considerable challenges to their career progression. Specifically, the study analyzes the career dilemmas and adaptive strategies encountered within the dynamic interplay of “career stage--family life cycle--individual life course.” By examining these temporal dimensions within nurses' career trajectories, we aim to contribute to the broader understanding of the nursing profession and provide insights into supporting nurses in their multifaceted career journeys.
