Credit Bearing Module Restrictions

All are open to Durham University undergraduate and taught postgraduate students, providing they take no more than 30 credits below their level of study, and subject to individual degree programme regulations.

There are some additional restrictions that may apply

  • Students in the final year are generally discouraged from registering for a Stage 1 (Beginners) language module unless they have a specific need to study that language to support their future academic or career plans. Extra-curricular study options are otherwise available
  • Students are not usually allowed to register for more than two language electives (40 credits) during the duration of their degree programme, other than with the approval of their home Department (via a concession if necessary)
  • If a student does register for more than two language electives during the duration of their degree programme, they may be in no more than two different languages
  • Students are not usually allowed to register for two language electives in the same year, unless with the approval of their home Department, and then only in Year 1 of their studies (different arrangements may apply for incoming ERASMUS students). If a student does register for two language electives in the same year, they cannot both be at Stage 1 (beginners' level)
