The languages for all programmes comprise a series of non-credit-bearing language courses open to Durham University students and staff as well as members of the public. We offer a series of evening courses in 19 languages from beginners to higher advanced level. There are two course formats, of different duration according to your objectives. Courses run with start dates in January, April, July and October. Please see below for details of course availability at each point in the year.
This format offers learners the opportunity to study in shorter blocks. There are more frequent start dates (early October, early January, late April and early July) meaning language ability can be progressed with a flexible schedule. Courses comprise one 2-hour evening class per week. Two Language Development courses are equivalent to one Language Progression course. Language Development courses are delivered online.

Currently our most popular format, these courses are ideal for learners who wish to improve their language skills but have other commitments. A minimum of 2 hours of independent learning between classes is recommended. Language Progression courses are delivered in-person or online depending on language and level (the mode of delivery will be shown in the course listing and registration page).
