Abstract
What does it mean to think-in-place from the margins—and to stay there? This seminar asks how fieldwork, often seen as extractive or purely academic, can be reimagined as a mutual, cultural act. Both through her own practice as artist and as the founder of THE ΤΕΛΟΣ SOCIETY, Georgia Kotretsos will discuss how the arts, intangible heritage and practices rooted in tradition unfold in so-called “peripheral” regions of Greece. By examining how cultural fieldwork grounded in duration, trust, and improvisation can uncover overlooked knowledge and open forms of solidarity an avenues of growth for those invested in the so-called-centers. Using case studies from projects in remote islands, abandoned villages, and small towns, she will argue that marginal places often offer the sharpest critique of the centre; its cultural production—and the most radical visions for the future. The talk is designed for anyone interested in interdisciplinarity, culture, implications of morphology, and how research can become a shared, transformative creative experience. Expect visuals, anecdotes, and provocations rather than conclusions.
Places are limited and so any academic colleagues or students interested in attending in person must register here for a place.
